Chapter Sixteen

I am so over driving long distances. It’s just past eleven at night when I finally pull into my driveway after the second day of the conference. My legs feel numb and my hands hurt because I drove the whole four hours without stopping. I managed to be so busy all day that I never ran into Mason. That doesn’t mean I wasn’t thinking about him nonstop. I am so ready to be home so things can go back to normal and Mason can continue being Stonebrook High Mason not weirdly attractive and sweet STEM Conference Mason.

All I want to do is fall into bed—or maybe take a hot shower first—and sleep off the weekend. Unfortunately, my parents have other plans.

“How was the drive?” Mom asks when I walk through the door. She and Dad are both standing here as if they’ve been waiting at the front window ever since I texted them four hours ago that I was heading home.

“Tiring,” I say over a yawn.

Dad gives me a quick hug. He’s still in his work clothes, the classic khaki pants and R&B polo. “So what did you learn at this fancy science weekend?”

“All kinds of things.”

“Like?” He gives me one of those stares he reserves for summer interns who can’t hack construction work.

“Science…stuff.” I know I learned a lot this weekend; my laptop is filled with notes, pictures, and links to check out later. It’s my dad’s scrutinizing gaze that’s making all that information catch on fire in my brain and evaporate from my memory.

“College stuff?” Mom asks, giving me a hopeful smile.

I nod. “I discovered that earth sciences are definitely my favorite. That’s what I want to major in at FLU.”

“You know what college has great earth science programs?” Dad says. “A&M.”

I draw in a deep breath. “Can we please not talk about this now?”

“Blaine,” Mom says softly. “It’s a school night. Don’t hound her about A&M.”

“Did you know that working at the family business means you can write your own paychecks and be your own boss?” Dad says, completely ignoring Mom. The look he gives me is so infuriating. He’s not mad. He’s looking at me like I’m a little kid who just asked why the sky is blue. To him, I’m still his little girl, still this stupid kid with no idea about the real world. He thinks FLU is just a phase and that he knows best. I clench my hands into fists.

“I don’t want to be a real estate agent.”

Mom’s head tilts. She looks as though I’ve just stabbed her in the back. And maybe I have.

Dad just shrugs. “So? We can hire more agents. There are plenty of places for you at R&B. You could start some earth-friendly recycled renovation line or buy into all that handmade furniture you’re always taking about. You could do whatever you wanted if you stayed here and worked at the family company. Don’t you get that?”

“Dad, I do want to work with you. But I want college, too.
